by Sheela Philomena on May 25, 2013 at 11:46 research news new data links the flu vaccine Pandemrix to an increased risk of sleep disorder narcolepsy.
Other studies had already shown a link between the medicine used in the 2009-10 'swine flu' outbreak and a higher incidence of narcolepsy in children vaccinated, teens and people less than 30 years.

The new research, conducted by the National Institute of Finland for health and social welfare, has found that vaccines Pandemrix adults aged 20 to 64 years had a three to five times more at risk of contracting the disease than unvaccinated persons.
Narcolepsy is a chronic disorder of the nervous system that causes excessive sleepiness, often causing people to fall asleep uncontrollably.
Pandemrix was the main vaccine used in controlling the outbreak of 2009-2010 H1N1 flu, which has infected a fifth about the world's population, but turned out be as dangerous as normal "seasonal" flu.
In Finland, 25 adults developed of narcolepsy from 2009 to 2011-23 of them under 40 and no more 64, said the new study.
Eighteen had been given the Pandemrix.
"The increase in risk of narcolepsy attributed to vaccination with Pandemrix for adults is 1: 100 000, while in children, it is 6/100 000," the Institute said in a statement.
Disorder occurs normally between 25-50, 100,000 inhabitants, although figures are sketchy, according to a recent British study.
In March, Swedish research has linked the vaccine to a higher risk of narcolepsy among the under 30, not only children and adolescents thought.
The Sweden's medical products agency has found that the risk was three times higher among the Under-20s given Pandemrix and two times higher in persons aged 21 to 30 years.
Finland neighbours and the Sweden recommended their populations of some people of five and 10 million respectively, to participate in the mass vaccination during the fear of swine flu.
Since then, both Governments have agreed to provide financial compensation for the children.
Pandemrix, made by the British pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline has been the only vaccine used in the two countries - it was given to about 60 per cent of the Swedish population.
About 200 children less than 19 years of development in Sweden, narcolepsy and 80 in Finland.
But the Institute said that Pandemrix has also prevented one case of influenza swine 80,000 estimated in Finland and about 50 deaths.
In February, British research said that Pandemrix had increased risk of narcolepsy among four-to-18-year-olds by a factor of 14.
Last September, the European Centre for the prevention of diseases and disease control (ECDC) said evidence of centers of sleep in Finland and Sweden, said a risk of additional narcolepsy a 20,000 Pandemrix-vaccine for children and adolescents.
