Simple Tips to Have a Healthy Lifestyle

by Sheela Philomena on? August 07, 2013 at 4:37 PM Research News Experts have shared simple, easy tips to have a healthy lifestyle.

Femalefirst.co.uk shares easy tips to have a healthy lifestyle:

Simple Tips to Have a Healthy Lifestyle
1. Indulge more in physical activities. When you get out of the bed in the morning, before heading to the shower, try doing 15 knee bends, 15 lunges and 15 crunches.

2. Add some peanuts or peanut butter to your breakfast. This can help control cravings for up to 12 hours.

3. Go for morning walk. But double your walking speed. It helps burn a lot of calories and keeps you fit and healthy. It's great for those who take their dogs out for walks or mothers who take their babies out in strollers.

4. You can workout even while sitting on a chair in office. Raise your thighs slightly by clenching your muscles and then take them back down to two inches above the floor. You have to lean back slightly. It helps tone legs.

5. Try not to use lifts or escalators; instead, take the stairs. Start with one such substitution a day, and build up slowly. If your office is on the 20th floor. Take the lift till the 18th floor and walk up from there.

6. Park your car a little away from the office or shopping centre and rather walk. It will not only help you stay fit but it will also decrease stress.

7. You can download fitness applications in your smartphones as it will help you keep a check on your diet plans and fitness regimes. Check out the fitness applications available for your phones.

Regular Physical Exercise Linked to Healthy Sleep Patterns

The researchers conducted their study on a group of mice by adjusting the light and dark exposure in order to advance their body clocks by eight hours and later on returned them to a natural cycle.

The researchers found that while the older mice took longer to adapt to changes to their daily routine, their synchronization was faster if they regularly exercised on a running wheel.

"Our study demonstrates that voluntary exercise has an impact on circadian rhythms and this has implications for the health of older people living with environmentally induced circadian disruption. It is also indicates another health benefit to regular exercise", Institute of Neuroscience & Psychology's Professor Stephany Biello said.

Significant Difference Noted Between Brains of Alzheimer's Patients and Healthy Family Members

by Kathy Jones on? June 15, 2013 at 1:55 PM General Health News There is a significant and potentially pivotal difference in the brains of patients who have an inherited form of Alzheimer's disease compared to those of healthy family members who do not carry the mutation for the disease, a new study by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis reveals. Significant Difference Noted Between Brains of Alzheimer's Patients and Healthy Family Members
Researchers have known that amyloid beta, a protein fragment, builds up into plaques in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. They believe the plaques cause the memory loss and other cognitive problems that characterize the disease. Normal brain metabolism produces different forms of amyloid beta.

The new study shows that research participants with genetic mutations that cause early-onset Alzheimer's make about 20 percent more of a specific form of amyloid beta - known as amyloid beta 42 - than family members who do not have the Alzheimer's mutation.

Scientists found another, more surprising difference linked to amyloid beta 42 in mutation carriers: signs that amyloid beta 42 drops out of the cerebrospinal fluid much more quickly than other forms of amyloid beta. This may be because amyloid beta 42 is being deposited on brain amyloid plaques.

"These results indicate how much we should target amyloid beta 42 with Alzheimer's drugs," said Randall Bateman, MD, the Charles F. and Joanne Knight Distinguished Professor of Neurology. "We are hopeful that this and other research will lead to preventive therapies to delay or even possibly prevent Alzheimer's disease."

The study appears June 12 in Science Translational Medicine.

In addition to helping develop treatments for inherited Alzheimer's, investigations of these conditions have helped scientists lay the groundwork for advances in treatment of the much more common sporadic forms of the disease.

Three forms account for most of the amyloid beta found in the cerebrospinal fluid: amyloid beta 38, 40 and 42. Earlier studies of the human brain after death and using animal research had suggested that amyloid beta 42 was the most important contributor to Alzheimer's. The new study not only confirms this connection but also quantifies overproduction of amyloid beta 42 for the first time in living human brains.

Bateman, who co-developed a technique that measures the rate at which amyloid beta is produced and cleared from the cerebrospinal fluid, contacted several Washington University colleagues to see if they could develop a way to analyze the types of amyloid beta being produced in the brain.

Bateman, metabolism expert Bruce Patterson, PhD, and biomedical engineer Donald Elbert, PhD, created a new mathematical model to describe the production and clearance of amyloid beta.

The scientists applied the model to data from 11 research participants with Alzheimer's mutations and 12 related family members who did not have the genetic errors that cause Alzheimer's. The model let the scientists compare the production rates of the protein's different forms, revealing an increase in amyloid beta 42 production in subjects with an Alzheimer's gene.

"Working in isolation, any one of us would likely have gotten the wrong answer, or no answer," Elbert said. "Bringing our different skill sets together let us tackle a very complex physiological problem."

Scientists are testing the new model on data from approximately 100 Alzheimer's patients.

"We hope that our new insights about the production and clearance of amyloid beta proteins will pave the way for future studies aimed at understanding and altering the metabolic processes that underlie this devastating disease," Patterson said.

Have You Ever Wondered How Healthy You Are For Your Age?

by Rukmani Krishna on? May 25, 2013 at 11:40 PM Lifestyle News Details of a technique to measure the health of human genetic material in relation to a patient's age will be published by Jove on May 22nd. The method is demonstrated by the laboratory of Dr. Gil Atzmon at New York's Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Atzmon hopes that the dissemination of this technique will lead to the development of a "genetic thermometer" to assess a patient's health in relation to other individuals of the same age. Have You Ever Wondered How Healthy You Are For Your Age?
The JoVE publication will feature a technique that measures telomere length. Recently, telomeres have gained attention because they serve as "caps" to chromosomes. As such, they mark the ends of genetic material and ensure that genes do not degrade as cells divide. Starting with the first replication of DNA and division of a fertilized egg, chromosomes shorten because the DNA replication process is imperfect. Certain organs, like the stomach or skin, are composed of tissues that reconstitute themselves frequently. In these organs, and in young individuals, the telomerase enzyme extends telomeres with each division, negating chromosomal shortening that would otherwise occur. Telomerase activity declines as people age, and as a result telomeres shorten and can be responsible for age related afflictions and some cancers. Overall health can impact how quickly these telomeres degrade.

"Think of telomere length as though it was a thermometer.? It measures the health of your genetic material," Dr. Atzmon explains. "It tells you how fit you are in relation to the age you are. If you have longer telomeres you are in good shape, if you have shorter telomeres you are less fit for your age and are not in good health."

Dr. Atzmon hopes that publication of this article will impact the ageing community by classifying health relative to an individual's age. "I published in JoVE because I want more people to use the technique. As we [the medical community] collect more data, we can build a better index of age and health by population, and more accurately place a patient on the right spot in a continuum."

Adoption of this technique will allow clinicians to monitor a patient's health as they are treated, by comparing telomere degradation of a sick patient to other patients with that disease and to determine if treatment is slowing degradation. Dr. Kira Henderson, JoVE Editor and Director of Review, explains, "Telomere length and telomerase function impacts several realms of biological and medical research- from preventative aging models to cancer treatments. ?Maintaining the telomere is a pre-requisite to extending life and improving long-term health. ?It is our hope that the application of this JoVE video-article will?elucidate?relationships between disease state and telomere function and encourage advancement in this important field of study.

Pre-order lunch encourages healthy eating habits

by Dr.Enozia Van Daele on May 04, 2013 at 2:42 pm News Diet & Nutrition it is well known that buying food when you have hungry is a complete recipe for a disaster. When we are hungry, we are particularly sensitive to views and smells of food that will satisfy, but are not always in nutritional value. What happens if we could make our choice of meal when we are full, and not to anticipate the feeling of fullness we all enjoy? It would make healthier choices? Researchers from the Cornell Center for behavioral economics in (B.E.N. Center) Child Nutrition programs has undertaken to test if pre-order lunch would push students to do more healthy entr e choice. Pre-Ordering Lunch Encourages Healthy Eating Habits
Pre-order lunch form

In two schools of elementary upstate New York, students use a pre-booking system electronics to lunch stopped in the morning. Fourteen teachers decided to register their classes in a four-week study to test the effects of the pre-order lunch. These classrooms were assigned randomly to one of the three experimental conditions: 1) stop pre-order for the 3rd week and resume for the 4th week, 2) stop pre-order for the 4th week or 3) continuous pre-order for all four weeks.

What did sales saves the report? A significant number of healthier choices have been made when pre-ordered students lunch. When preordered was available, 29.4% of the students ordered the most healthy entr e lunch against 15.3% when no preorder took place. When ordering in the noon line, hunger mixed with flavourings and the sight of unhealthy foods, in spontaneous food decisions: e selection healthy entr was reduced by 48% and less e choice healthy entr has increased by 21%.

More details on the study

This is excellent news! At school, preorder can help students make healthier choices in entr es. Simply by changing the decision environment, students were oriented in this direction to select the best health entr es. Even if the schools in this study used an electronic booking system, paper systems can be just as effective and less costly. Each system provides an effective method to help students to make conscious decisions over health at lunch.
